You will have plenty of time to join a larger faction in time however learning the rules is absolutely essential first. I highly advise checking out a smaller server such as EU Genesis initially as it is more suited for learning. This can be the case if you do not know where to look. This can lead to a very enjoyable experience.When first reading about the mod I was told not to expect a helpful or friendly community. You can expect at peak times over a weekend for multiple large factions to be at constant war. Persistent World brings mount and blade into an open world, in a land where (player only) factions are in constant war over the castles.
